Scammed on Cash App? How to try to get your money back

5 min read

The short answer

Open Cash App, go to your profile, and report the payment through Support right away. If the payment is still pending you may be able to cancel it, but Cash App says completed person-to-person payments are "usually final." Unauthorized Cash Card charges have stronger protection if you report them within 60 days.

First, figure out which kind of loss it is

Cash App treats these very differently, so start here.

  • A payment you sent to someone in the app (often called a P2P payment). Cash App says completed payments are "usually final," and for payments you authorized, "reimbursement depends on the circumstances." This is the harder case.
  • A Cash Card charge you didn't make (someone used your card number). Cash App says it offers zero fraud liability on unauthorized Cash Card transactions reported within 60 days. This is the stronger case.
  • Someone got into your Cash App account and sent money. Report it as unauthorized and say you didn't send it. Also secure the account (see below).
  • You bought or sent bitcoin in Cash App because someone told you to. Treat this like a crypto scam. Report it in the app, then read our Bitcoin ATM and crypto steps.

What to do right now

  1. Check if it's still pending

Open the activity tab and tap the payment. Cash App says a pending payment may be stoppable if you act quickly. If you see a cancel option, use it.

  2. Report it in the app

Tap your profile, then Support. Choose the payment and report it as a scam. This is the fastest route, according to Cash App.

  3. Or call Cash App

The number is 1-800-969-1940. Cash App lists hours of 8am to 9:30pm Eastern, every day. Never use a "Cash App support" number from a search ad, social media, or a text.

  4. If the app is linked to a bank card or credit card

Call that bank or card company too. They may have their own dispute process. Ask what applies when a payment app was used.

  5. Secure the account

Change your Cash App PIN and the password on the email or phone number you use to sign in. Never share the sign-in code Cash App sends you.

  6. Report to the FTC and IC3

File at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov. The FTC tells people paid through payment apps to report to the app and ask for a reversal.

What to write in your report

Copy and fill in

"I'm reporting a scam. On [date] I sent $[amount] to $[Cashtag] after [one sentence about what they said]."

"The person claimed to be [who]. I later found out it was a scam."

"Please stop or reverse the payment if possible, and review this for reimbursement."

"I have reported it to the FTC (report number [#])."

Take screenshots of the payment, the Cashtag, and every message before you block the scammer. Blocking can make the chat harder to find.

Fake Cash App support: the second scam

After a loss, many people search for "Cash App phone number" and land on a fake. Cash App says real support teams don't ask for sign-in codes, passwords, or personal information through DMs, texts, or unsolicited calls.

  • Real Cash App support will never ask you to send a "test" payment.
  • They won't ask for your PIN or the code Cash App texts you.
  • They won't contact you first through social media.
  • If someone says they can "unlock a refund" for a fee, hang up.

Cash App scams that hit older adults most

  • A "family member" in trouble asking for money fast. See the grandparent scam.
  • A fake prize that needs a "fee" first. Real prizes are free. See sweepstakes scams.
  • A new online friend or sweetheart who needs help. See romance scams.
  • Someone who "accidentally" sent you money and asks for it back. Don't send anything. Report it and let Cash App handle it.

If you're helping a parent

Sit with your mom or dad and make the report together from their phone. Cash App will need to deal with the account owner. Afterward, consider whether they need Cash App at all. If they only use it to receive money from family, there may be safer ways to do that.
